The Christian

The Christian Introduction: 1. What do you think about God? -Give me your opinion of God. 2. What do you think that God thinks about us? (His expectations, thoughts, etc.) 3. 1 Pet. 2:4-10. I. Lively stones (verse 5). A. Christ is the corner stone (verses 6-8). He is the vital link of the church (Mt. 16:18; Eph. 2:19-22). Christ is the stone that was rejected, he was a stumbling block and a rock of offense. B. Christians are: 1. Alive (Col. 3:3-4). 2. Sharing in Christ’s life (2 Cor. 3:18). 3. Bearing their own burdens (Gal. 6:5). II. Holy (Royal) priesthood (verses 5, 9). A. In the Old Testament the priest hood were from the tribe of Levi. They were washed, wore prescribed clothes. They were anointed of God, took care of the tabernacle and offered sacrifices. B. The Christian: 1. Has access to God (Eph. 2:18; 3:12; Heb. 10:19-22). 2. Charged (1 Chron 16:28) to glorify God. We are to offer up spiritual sacrifice: a. Bodies (Rom. 12:1-2; 6:12-13), b. Worship (Heb. 13:15), c. Good deeds (Heb. 13:16; Titus 3:1, 8, 14). III. Chosen generation (verse 9). A. Old Testament: Israel was God’s chosen people (Isa. 43:20, 21; Deut. 7:6-9). Through unbelief they were broken off (Rom. 11:13-24). B. We are chosen (Eph. 1:11; 2 Thes. 2:13). 1. Notes it is of character and not individuality that we are chosen by God (Eph. 1:3). We have been called (2 Thes. 2:14). It is a universal invitation (Rev. 22:17) by an impartial God (Acts 10:34-35). 2. Chosen-Saved by God we must develop our own holiness (1 Pet. 1:16; Phil 2:14, 15). 3. We are to follow the plan and steps of God. IV. Holy nation (verse 9). A. Idea: We are set apart people. Israel was considered God’s people (Ex. 19:6; Lev. 19:2; 20:26). B. Today: 1. We have been set apart (Ps. 4:3: 2 Tim. 2:21; Rom. 6:6). 2. Placed in a nation where Christ is king (Rev. 1:5; 1 Tim. 6:15). 3. Our citizenship remains in Christ and we act accordingly (2 Cor. 6:17; 1 Cor. 6:11; Eph. 4:17-22). V. Peculiar people (verse 9). A. Purchased-belong to God. B. The Christian: 1. Before a Christian (Eph. 2:2; Rom. 6:16-18). 2. We have been bought (1 Pet. 1:18-19; 1 Cor. 6:20).
