Husbands and Wives

Introduction: 1. The relationship that husbands and wives enjoy is most precious. 2. Both have responsibilities to enjoy and uphold (1 Pet. 3:1-7). I. Wives A. A beautiful order to the family. The wife is to be submissive. 1. Meaning-rank under. 2. It has nothing to do with value, intellect or importance (Gal. 3:28; Gen. 1:28). 3. There is to be an order for the family (Eph. 5:21f.; Titus 2:4-5; Col. 3:18). Note: She is to submit to her “own” husband not to every man. 4. Your life becomes a means of evangelizing. (Titus 2:7; Phil. 2:15; Prov. 31:26). B. A beautiful heart. Her life demonstrates a great beauty that comes from her heart. It is 1. Chaste/pure (Titus 2:5; 1Tim. 5:22). 2. Fear-respect for the position and person (Eph. 5:33). 3. Gentle (humble, meek) (Mt. 5:5). 3. Tranquil/peaceful. {These attitudes come from the heart (Mt. 15:18; 2 Cor. 4:16; Ps. 51:10)>Prov. 31:30.} C. A beautiful exterior. 1. The dress of the godly woman (Prov. 31:22). 2. Her dress is to be modest (1 Tim. 2:9, 10). 3. Not ornamental that brings attention to self nor a fashion plate of ungodly dress. 4. Respects her husband, her God, and her Savior. D. Depicted by Sarah. II. Husband. A. Companionship. 1. Live with your “own” wife-close intimate, relationship. 2. Love your wife (Eph. 5:25-28; Prov. 5:18, 19). 3. He knows her likes, moods, feelings, hopes, dreams, etc. B. Chivalry. 1. Your wife is the weaker (physical strength and not value, emotional, or spiritual state) vessel. 2. The husband protects and provides for his wife (1 Tim. 5:8; Titus 2:4, 5; 1 Sam. 1:4, 5; Col. 3:19). (i.e. speak sweet, open doors, hold hands, go out to eat, sit and talk.) C. Respect-honor, value her (Prov. 12:4; 18:22; 19:14). Treat her as special. She is your priority. D. Common ground-sharers in the grace of life (1 Cor. 7:16; Gen. 7:8; 1 Sam. 2:19; Lk. 1:5, 6). E. Note: Improper family relationships hinder prayers (verse 7). Conclusion: Give us spouses like Jacob-who loved his wife, Elkanah who worshipped with his wife, Zacharias who lived right, Joseph who did not embarrass his wife, Aquilla who worked for Christ with his wife. We need wives like Sarah who respected her husband, Elizabeth who lived a righteous life, Rachel who encouraged her husband, Priscilla who was a soul winner with her husband, or Peter’s wife who helped her husband become qualified to be an elder.
