Responsibilities

Introduction: 1. In our society today there is great antagonism, division, rebellion, divorce, etc. 2. We need to live in harmony 3. Eph. 6:1-9. I. Children. A. Obey your parents. 1. Defined-listening up, paying attention. 2. God has set the expectation (Ex. 20:12), Paul affirmed it (Col. 3:20). 3. “This is right” (Ps.119:75; 19:8). 4. Disobedient children are a shame to their parents (Prov. 10:1). B. Honor your parents. 1. Defined regard highly and show respect. (Mal. 1:6; Prov. 23:22). 2. 8 million children seriously assault their parents each year. C. Blessing-live long upon the earth. One good generation can lead to another good generation. II. Parents. (Children are gifts 1 Sam. 2:20; Ps. 127:3). A. Don’t provoke. 1. Children were not highly thought of in Paul’s day. 2. Don’t stir to anger (Col. 3:21). B. Bring your children up in the….1. Nurture-sharing of love (Lk. 2:52). 2. Discipline-systematic training (Prov. 13:24; 22:6; 12:1). 3. Encourage and instruct. III. Servants. (Slaves were ill treated in Paul’s day. Today these verses may be applied to the employee-employer relationship.) A. We are to be good employees. We are to work (1 Tim. 5:8; 1 Thes. 4:11, 12). Characteristics of a good employee are honest, conscientious, loyal, truthful, good attitude, diligent. For (Mt. 10:10; Titus 2:9, 10). B. Purpose-We are servants of Christ and when people look at us they see him (Titus 2:9, 10; 1 Tim. 4:12). We are working for the Lord (1 Cor. 10:31). IV. Employers. A. Treat employees as Christ would with honor, respect, fairness, seeking ones best. B. Not threaten (Col. 4:1). Be fair to all (1 Tim. 5:21).
