The Trials of Our Life
Introduction: 1. Life does not always run smooth. 2. James 1:1-12 I. Trouble is a reality (verse 2). A. “When” is inevitable, “falling into” is unexpectedly. B. Not if but when. C. It is a universal problem (Mt. 5:11, 12; 2 Tim. 3:12; 1 Pet. 4:12). It really should not be poor me but when. II. Our response is to be unique (verse 2). A. Typical responses to our problems include self pity, frustrated, stressed, and overwhelmed. James says to count it all joy-pure joy, sheer joy. B. This may not be the typical response but it is the Biblical response (1 Pet. 1:6, 7; 4:13). C. Reason for the response (Heb. 12:5f.). III. Realize the purpose of our trouble (3-4). A. Our trials in life may not seem joyous but if we will understand their purposes then it will help us to appreciate our troubles. B. Viewed negatively feel bad, use our money, God is vindictive. C. Viewed positively: 1. It validates our faith by testing its genuineness. 2. Problems develop patience (Heb. 10:36; 12:1-2). 3. Matures our Christian character (2 Thes. 1:3, 4). 4. Makes us more complete (1 Pet. 5:10). IV. We have special resources to help us deal with our trouble (verses 5-8). A. Wisdom-the ability to deal and judge soundly and graciously with the realities and events of life (Col. 4:5; Ps. 111:10; 19:7). B. Prayer (Ps. 61:1-3; Heb. 4:16; Mk. 9:14-26). V. We can rejoice in our victory over our trials (verse 12). A. Rejoicing in the present. B. Crown of life-eternal live with God and the redeemed of all the ages (2 Tim. 4:7-8; Rev. 2:10). Conclusion: Such is for those that love him (verse 12). They are undamaged or destroyed by the troubles or afflictions they go through.
