Facing Your Temptations

Introduction:
1.     We all face temptation. It is not the fact that we face temptation. Rather, it is how we face the temptation.
2.     James 1:13-18 gives us some insight into how we can face temptation and win.

I. Know where it is coming from (verse 13).
A.     We blame environment, heredity, disease, another, God.
B.     Don’t blame God. He is holy (Rev. 4:8; and right Rom. 9:14, Ps. 145:17. Such actions are beyond his nature (Mt. 19:17) and desire (2 Peter 3:9).
C.     Satan is a different story. He is called prince of world, Abadon, Apollyon, red dragon, adversary, power of air, enemy, and tempter. Our temptation comes from him (1 Thes. 3:5; Jn. 8:44.

II. Know Satan’s game plan (verses 14, 15).
A.     Drawn-subtle it is a hunting/angling term. Satan draws us away from church, Bible, prayer, other Christians. He uses his tools, tricks, and teachers.
B.     Satan uses our own personal weaknesses to get our attention-“own lust” (1 Jn. 2:15; 2 Tim. 4:10). We need self-control.
C.     He seduces us with these weaknesses. Our temptation is custom/tailor made (1 Tim. 5:15; 2 Cor. 11:3).
D.     When we say yes to temptation we give birth to sin in our lives (1 Jn. 3:4; 5:17).

III. Remember the goodness of the Lord.
A.     God is good. He gives what is good. Look what we have to battle our temptation-prayer Bible, brethren, and strength of will (1 Tim. 6:9-12; 1 Thes. 5:22).
B.     When we consider his blessing we are not as likely to sin (2 Sam. 12:7-8; Gen. 39:7f. (8,9); Prov. 10:22; Rom. 2:4).

Conclusion:
1.     Verse 18. The end of sin is death but look what the Lord does.
2.     Just say no.
