An Impressive Pair
Introduction: 1. Many folks do not want to become involved. 2. Such is true in our society and in the church today. 3. The context of Philippians 2:19-30. 4. Paul gives the church at Philippi two examples of ordinary Christians who were able to live a selfless, serving life. I. Timothy (verses 18-24). A. Background of Timothy. A loved companion of Paul. Met on first journey. He was a convert of Paul’s. He helped Paul on second journey. B. Sincerely cared for Philippi. He had a soft spot in his heart for these brethren. We need to look outside of ourselves and see opportunities. We can live Phil. 1:_____ or Phil. 2:21. Our responsibility (Mt. 25:41f.; Gal. 2:20; 1 Cor. 13:5). Love the brethren (Jn. 13:34; 1 Pet. 2:17; Heb. 13:1; 1 Thes. 5:11). C. Service to the Lord and brethren. Paul and Timothy served together. His purpose in life. Service to God (2 Cor. 5:15; 4:5; Acts 27:23). Service to the brethren (Acts 20:34, 35; 1 Cor. 9:18-22; 10:24; 33; Mt. 10:42). D. Spread the gospel. E. Sound in character. II. Epaphroditus (verses 25-30). A. Background. His name means “charming”. Believed to be a Gentile. He was a member at Philippi. Found Paul in jail. Carried Philippi’s gift to Paul. B. His service (verse 25). He was a worker (Eph.2:10), soldier in the Lord’s army (1 Tim. 6:12), a messenger. 2. He was a minister. A servant who gave without remuneration. 3. We are reminded that our service is one that should cost us (2 Sam. 24:24). He gave himself (2 Cor. 8:5). We are to labor together for the purpose of God and others (1 Cor 3:9; Titus 2:7, 14; 1 Cor. 15:58). C. His sacrifice (verses 26-30). 1. He gave time, effort, and was even willing to risk his life. We must be willing to give all we have (Acts 2:45; 4:35-37) and go to the ends of the earth for the brethren (2 Cor. 12:15). Conclusion: 1. This is an unlikely pair that is really an impressive pair. They show us that we can be the servants God wants us to be. Because of His Grace Entered on 6/13/2010
