Earth Based But Heaven Bound

Introduction:
     1. Where are you headed?
2. Where are you now?
     3. Philippians 3:17-21. Paul reminds us that we are on a journey that starts here and ends
in heaven because of where our dual citizenship resides.

I. A pattern to acknowledge (verse 17).
A. Brethren refers to the whole congregation. Followers means-imitators. Note the
context.
B. God has a pattern (Rom. 16:17).
1. In words (Heb. 2:1).
2. By example (Titus 2:7).
C. We need to follow the pattern of God’s will (1 Cor. 11:1; Heb. 12:2; Jn. 10:4, 5). We are
born imitators. We need to imitate Paul, Ephaproditus, Barnabas, Onesiphorus, Titus, Ezra, Nehemiah.
D. Follow the example given (Phil. 3:15; 2 Tim. 1:13; Titus 2:1, 7).

II. A people to avoid (verses 18, 19).
A. Paul warns of false teachers. Look what they do.
B. False preachers.
1. Don’t give them any attention (1 Jn. 4:1). Reason (1 Tim. 1:3;Acts 20:30)
2. Attitude toward.
3. Action to take towards. Meet legalism, liberalism, etc. with compassion (Eph.
4:15; Phil. 1:7; 1 Pet. 3:15).
C. False practitioners.
1. Today-look how far people have carried it. (Jer. 6:15).
2. Center of our life is to be the cross (Eph. 2:16; 1 Cor. 1:18; 2:2; Gal.
6:14>Heb. 6:6).

III. A purpose to achieve (verses 20, 21).
A. We have dual citizenship.
B. We are passing through (Heb. 11:13).
C. We are to be a Christians (2 Cor. 7:1; 10:3) with our minds set upon heaven
(Heb. 12:2), anticipating the Lord’s coming (Mt. 25:1-13).
D. Remember Abraham and Moses.

Conclusion:
     Stand firm (4:1).
