Earth Based But Heaven Bound
Introduction: 1. Where are you headed? 2. Where are you now? 3. Philippians 3:17-21. Paul reminds us that we are on a journey that starts here and ends in heaven because of where our dual citizenship resides. I. A pattern to acknowledge (verse 17). A. Brethren refers to the whole congregation. Followers means-imitators. Note the context. B. God has a pattern (Rom. 16:17). 1. In words (Heb. 2:1). 2. By example (Titus 2:7). C. We need to follow the pattern of God’s will (1 Cor. 11:1; Heb. 12:2; Jn. 10:4, 5). We are born imitators. We need to imitate Paul, Ephaproditus, Barnabas, Onesiphorus, Titus, Ezra, Nehemiah. D. Follow the example given (Phil. 3:15; 2 Tim. 1:13; Titus 2:1, 7). II. A people to avoid (verses 18, 19). A. Paul warns of false teachers. Look what they do. B. False preachers. 1. Don’t give them any attention (1 Jn. 4:1). Reason (1 Tim. 1:3;Acts 20:30) 2. Attitude toward. 3. Action to take towards. Meet legalism, liberalism, etc. with compassion (Eph. 4:15; Phil. 1:7; 1 Pet. 3:15). C. False practitioners. 1. Today-look how far people have carried it. (Jer. 6:15). 2. Center of our life is to be the cross (Eph. 2:16; 1 Cor. 1:18; 2:2; Gal. 6:14>Heb. 6:6). III. A purpose to achieve (verses 20, 21). A. We have dual citizenship. B. We are passing through (Heb. 11:13). C. We are to be a Christians (2 Cor. 7:1; 10:3) with our minds set upon heaven (Heb. 12:2), anticipating the Lord’s coming (Mt. 25:1-13). D.
