Striving TowardThe Goal
Introduction: 1. Have you ever set a goal for yourself? How did you go about reaching that goal? 2. Paul is using himself as an example to explain how we can meet the goal of being the righteous person God desires of us. 3. Philippians 3:12-16. I. Dissatisfaction. A. Folks can become self satisfied (Rev. 3:1, 17; 2:9). B. Often it is a failure to take a self inventory and be honest with yourself (2 Cor. 13:5; 4:3, 4). II. Devotion (one thing). A. Many folks have a “one track” mind. Others have a mind that goes all over. B. One thing is important (Mk. 10:21; Lk. 10:42; Jn. 9:25; Ps. 27:4). C. Direction. (Ja. 1:8). Single minded in thought (1 Sam. 12:24). Note: (Heb. 11:13-16; 12:2). D. Neh. 6:3. III. Forget the past. A. What do we do with the past? (Idolize it, cherish it, feel guilt and remorse for it, relive it, become indifferent by it, glory in it, enjoy it.) B. Forget past successes, defeats, sins, failures. C. Don’t let the past dominate you. IV. Determination. A. “Press”-intense endeavor. “Mark”-a mark-fix eyes on-scope. It includes involvement and determination. B. The Christian has a goal (1 Cor. 9:24; 2 Tim. 4:7-8>Rev. 21:3, 4). C. One track heart/mind/intention (Col. 3:1; Mt. 6:33). No roadblocks (procrastination, discouragement, unplanned family issues, financial setbacks, addictions, etc.). V. Discipline. A. Verse 16 means to walk in line with. B. True God has given us rules. How we look at them determines how we react to them. C. (Ps. 78:5-7) D. Follow God at all times (1 Tim. 6:14; Ecc. 12:13, 14; Ezra 7:10). Entered on 7/4/2010
